• 1858 – British Crown takes control from East India Company (Government of India Act 1858).

• 1885 – Indian National Congress founded at Bombay by A. O. Hume.

• 1905 – Partition of Bengal by Lord Curzon; Swadeshi Movement begins.

• 1906 – All India Muslim League founded at Dhaka.

• 1907 – Surat Session of Congress; split between Moderates and Extremists.

• 1911 – Partition of Bengal annulled; capital shifted from Calcutta to Delhi.

• 1915 – Mahatma Gandhi returned to India from South Africa.

• 1917 – Champaran Satyagraha (first Gandhian movement in India).
