3-Phase EMU of South Central Railway - 110 kmph designed by Hyderabad based M/s MEDHA Servo Drives
Ltd.
The new 12-car EMU train ready at Villivakkam station yard (ICF/Chennai)
There is something to cheer about for commuters in the twin
cities of Hyderabad & Secunderabad. New 12-car rake Electrical Multiple
Unit (EMU) will be inducted into MMTS services.
The salient features of this 12-car (coaches) EMU trains that
are likely to appeal to passengers are:
Ø Increase in maximun speed from 96km per hour to 105 km
per hour, which will reduce travel time
Ø There is a smooth speed control by
VVVF technology for comfortable ride.
Ø LED lighting system
Ø Ergonomically-designed seats
Ø An increase in “standing passengers”
capacity from 3768 to 4852
Ø CCTV cameras in all the Ladies compartments
for safety of women passengers. These are surveillance cameras to strengthen
security for women passengers.
Ø A modular roof-mounted ventilation
system in addition to the regular fans.
Ø LED indication when alarm chain is
pulled
Ø A good passenger information system.
In an obvious advantage over single-phase EMUs with two station-display units,
these new trains are equipped with four display units per coach.
Ø When alarm chain is pulled in Ladies
coach, a LED light will glow in the Driver’s cabin. As the coach will be
indicated, prompt intervention is possible.
Ø “The
new ventilation system lets in about 16,000 cubic metres of fresh air, every
hour — a unique feature that is likely to be appreciated when the train is
packed. A PA system for private communication between crew.
Ø An event recorder, on the lines of a
black box in planes, has been incorporated.
Ø Sensors installed in the cabin to
facilitate computer-monitored speed control and braking.
Ø The three-phase EMU puts out 5744
Horse Power as against 3584 HP by a single-phase train.
Ø Due to its three-phase drive
technology, this train saves on maintenance costs.
Ø Above all, during braking, 30% power
will be regenerated and sent back to the overhead lines. The electricity
generated in this process would be fed into the grid.
Ø The new 12-car rake consists of 4 units
with IGBT technology (Integrated Gate Bipolar Transistors) 3-phase propulsion
system.
Ø These coaches are fitted with
easy to slide, light weight sliding doors supported by imported sliding
mechanism including user friendly locks, latches, and maintenance-free rollers. It is not only energy-efficient but also
requires less maintenance because of oil-free compressor.
